ANGELA FULLER-HEYDE violin
MENDELSSOHN Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave) Overture
KAREEM ROUSTOM Violin Concerto No. 2: with might and main
RAVEL Mother Goose Suite
One of the great musical examples of Romantic scene painting, the Hebrides Overture uniquely takes the listener on a musical journey to a dark windswept cave off the coast of Scotland. Mendelssohn, a child prodigy and ardent traveler, set off at the age of 20, to explore the rugged beauty of Scotland. Moved by a ferry ride to the Hebrides Islands, he drafted the evocative opening on the spot.
We invite you to be the first to hear Emmy-nominated composer Kareem Roustom’s Second Violin Concerto, composed for DSO principal second violinist Angela Fuller-Heyde.
“The first movement was composed last and is very much reflective on the COVID infected world as well as the righteous swelling of anger at systematic racism in the US and beyond. None of the three movements have titles but each expresses deeply felt emotions which I still need to think about how to put into words. The sub-title, with might and main, is a tautological phrase which means ‘with great vigor’ or ‘with as much force as possible.”

Originally composed as a piano duet for two of Ravel’s young friends, the programmatic orchestral Mother Goose Suite is bursting with playful dances from faraway regions, using the full range of instrumental colors and timbres to tell beloved stories such as Beauty and the Beast and The Enchanted Garden.
